Tarantula Truffles

Halloween fun at home

Halloween is often assumed to have traversed the Atlantic from the US, but in the UK the origins of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celts. For more information read  When Is Halloween?

The celebration has morphed many times over thousands of years, and it will certainly be different again this year.

Trick or treating seems highly unlikely (I can’t say I’ll miss it!) and so it makes sense to make a bit of an occasion of Halloween at home.

Carve pumpkins, light some candles and indulge in some of these delicious treats (tricks optional).

Recipe of the Week: Toffee Apple Crumble

Toffee Apple Crumble

Crumble Night

‘Crumble Night’ was an almost weekly event with my university flatmates and me, where we took turns to make our favourite pud to share.

It was a love we all had in common, helping to form our friendships for the next three years and beyond.

Whilst it may not be all that great for the waistline to enjoy every day, crumble reminds me of those autumnal evenings and brings a smile to my face.

I may have to resurrect this tasty tradition in our house!

Toffee Apple Crumble, a gorgeous recipe from the 2021 Dairy Diary is the perfect way to begin the season, now that the nights are growing darker and the golden leaves start to fall.

Best served with custard or cream of course!

Recipe of the Week: Frying Pan Clafoutis

Frying Pan Clafoutis

Clafoutis is a baked French dessert

It is a speciality of the Limousin region. The name is said to come from the Occitan dialect word claufir, meaning to cover or fill.

Fruit, traditionally cherries, is arranged in a buttered dish and covered with a thick batter and cooked until only just set.

Our recipe – from A Zest for Life – uses autumnal fruit instead of cherries and adds a cheeky dash of Calvados. There are more delicious autumnal recipes in this month’s recipe collection.

Make the perfect Pimm’s

Make the perfect Pimm's

There’s something delightfully civilised about serving a jug of Pimm’s

It always makes me feel summery and reminds me of village fetes and weddings, and sunshine.

There may be fewer summer events this year, but we can still enjoy a jug of this fruity cocktail.
