Handmade Valentine’s Card

There’s something really special about receiving a card that has been handmade.

It may not have cost as much, but the thought and time that has gone into it account for a lot more.

I have probably rabbited on about it in the past, but cardmaking is one of my favourite pastimes.

Here’s the one I have made for my fantastic other half (I hope he doesn’t read the blog today!)

If you would like to give it a go, just follow the steps below. It’s so simple; just make sure you have materials with different patterns of the same colour.

1 First cut a square of card and several pieces of ribbon a little longer than the length of the card. Using tape, attach several pieces of ribbon all along one side on the back of the card.

2 Stick down one length of ribbon on the back of an adjacent side and then weave through the other ribbons. Stick the other end to the back. Repeat.

3 Cut 2 or 3 pieces of paper that coordinate with your ribbons. Using double-sided tape, affix one on top of the other and fix onto a blank card.

4 Glue a heart embellishment in the centre of your woven ribbons. Tadaa!

I am sure your loved-one will love it. Enjoy your special time together.

British strawberries are the best

Strawberries have been great this year, haven’t they?

British strawberries are the bestThat wonderful aroma makes them irresistible – in fact, they often smell better than they taste, but this year they’re full of flavour.

Apparently, we have the lovely weather earlier in the year to thank for that, all that glorious sunshine bringing on the English fruit and so not so many imports. And strawberries are so versatile. I love them just as they are, or with cream or yoghurt (or in a Pimms!) but you can make smoothies, tarts, cakes – jam if you’re very dedicated and have a glut.

I’ve come across a great idea in the New Dairy Cookbook – free-form pie. The idea is that you don’t have to worry too much about quantities, or rolling out the pastry to a precise shape. Music to my ears! The recipe uses rhubarb, apple and strawberries, and includes semolina or polenta to soak up the juices a bit and stop the bottom of the pie getting soggy. Why didn’t I think of that before?! This one’s definitely on the to do list.

Summer Pudding
A very British recipe is the simply stunning Summer Pudding – taken from the 2012 edition of The Dairy Book of Home Cookery, available in the autumn – easy to prepare and bursting with sunny goodness.

Apparently, centuries ago, an abbess decreed that strawberries were poisonous because they grow so close to the ground – how could they not be contaminated?

Actually, they’re really good for you – full of vitamin C and iodine and a natural remedy to help relieve inflammatory pain.

Thanks heavens we’ve seen the light!

Mum’s bread pudding

A pair of blackbirds frequent our garden – enticed in by the ground feed and crumbled bread I put out for them no doubt.

They nested in the shrubs at the bottom of my neighbour’s garden earlier in the year and I think they may have another brood.

Haven’t seen the female for a few days, but then I haven’t seen the male popping into the bushes, beak full of tasty morsels, either! Maybe it’s just wishful thinking – hope the local moggies haven’t got her!

The birds do like the bread and it is a bit special – baked on the premises by an Italian baker about five minutes’ walk away.

How lucky is that! It’s wonderful fresh, so I tend to get a large loaf every two days (makes good toast on the second day), which means there’s often some left. I have been giving it to the birds but I’m wondering about making some bread pudding.

Bread pudding

Cherry Bread PuddingMy mother had the world’s best recipe, which she wrote down for me centuries ago and I now can’t find.

I haven’t thrown it away so it’s here somewhere and one day I’ll find it! Meantime I was flicking through my copy of the Dairy Diary and came across a recipe for Cherry Bread Puddings.

From the picture they look fantastic, so I’ll give them a go. Who knows, they man run my mum’s a close second!
