The Perfect Christmas Gift

Dairy Diary Set 2014. The perfect Christmas Gift.

The Perfect Christmas Gift

Fourteen and a half years’ ago, I started a new job. This job was a stop-gap to fill a void between an awful job in the print industry and my ‘proper’ graduate forever job.

Many training courses and hard work have resulted in that stop-gap job becoming my proper forever graduate job and I absolutely love it.

Dairy Diary 2014 with memorable date stickersI’ve always had an affection for stationery (do any girls grow out of this?) and so working on a diary is perfect for me. You may have noticed that the diary now includes a handy notes pocket and sticker sheet. Yes, another nod to my obsession with stationery, but also very popular with our customers.

Dairy Diary Set

As we’re such a small team, I get involved in almost every aspect of the business, including the Dairy Diary Set, which always features the Dairy Diary, pocket diary and other stationery bits and bobs.

Getting paid to wander around stationery
departments is not a problem for me!

This year, we have included a pen, which is comfy to hold and pleasant to write with. Several samples were returned as they had those awful scratchy nibs – not good enough for our Set!

Dairy Diary Set organiser and pocket diaryThe little book contains a notepad, post-it-note pad and page markers. I use these page markers in all my cookbooks to flag up my favourite recipes. The notepad and sticky notes are perfect for shopping list and reminders.

The Dairy Diary Set is available to buy now. You can order online <link> or over the phone 01425 463390/0845 0948128 or from your local milkman, if you have one. It’s a really affordable gift but also a rather lovely treat for yourself.

And here’s a Dairy Diary recipe to whet your appetite.

Recipes for a Happy Halloween

Stroll around any supermarket and you will be literally attacked by Halloween merchandise – it’s everywhere!

I’m not quite sure how I feel about the whole Halloween thing – especially encouraging our children to dress up in hellish costumers and knock on strangers’ doors begging for sweets. However, it can be a great excuse to get crafting.

Halloween pumpkin carving

The most obvious thing to do, of course, is pumpkin carving.  A beautifully carved pumpkin can be really quite lovely.  I don’t know if we have the talent to produce something like this but we will certainly attempt a simple version.

And in the 2014 Dairy Diary, there’s a fab Pumpkin & Ginger Risotto recipe for using up leftover pumpkin flesh. Ideal for a romantic meal for two after the children are safely tucked up in bed!

And for the little ones to make? How about this fabulous recipe for Halloween Cake Pops? They are simple to make and look so pretty (although our talented food stylist Sara, may be a little more artistic than my children!)

There are many more super seasonal recipes in the 2014 Dairy Diary and it’s only a click away!

Us Brits have some quaint customs don’t we?

From rolling cheese down a hill to burning an effigy of the bloke who tried to blow up parliament, we can be quite eccentric with our celebrations.

Isn’t it fun though?

Children's-harvest-festival-trailerOn Sunday we went along to my son’s school harvest festival. It begins with all the children climbing aboard a trailer filled with hay bales and being pulled by a tractor around the village clutching their harvest offerings. Isaac absolutely loved it!

Of course, celebrating the harvest is an age-old custom dating back to pagan times.

The harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday nearest to the Harvest Moon (the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox). Religious or not, it’s a lovely way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday giving thanks for the food we eat and donating a little of what we have to those who really don’t have much at all.

For our harvest parcel, we baked a
gorgeous loaf of bread from the 2014 Dairy Diary.
It looked quite the pièce de résistance snuggled
in amongst the apples and carrots.

Suitable for freezing

Pink spring rhubarb 500g (1lb 2oz) washed, trimmed and cut into 2.5cm (1in) pieces
Caster sugar 225g (8oz)
Lemon 1, juice only

1 Put rhubarb, caster sugar, lemon juice and 150ml (¼ pint) of water into a non-reactive saucepan, cover with a tight fitting lid and cook gently for 15-20 minutes until rhubarb is soft.

2 Allow rhubarb to cool until cold, then pour all the mixture into a food processor and blend until smooth.

3 Freeze rhubarb mixture in an ice cream making machine. Or pour into a bowl and freeze, whisking frequently – around once an hour – to prevent ice crystals forming. When the sorbet is almost frozen, transfer to a plastic container, cover and store in the freezer until required.

4 Serve scoops of sorbet in chilled glasses.
