British Yorkshire Pudding Day

How to make the perfect Yorkshire pudding

British Yorkshire Pudding Day

Dairy Diary has such a loyal following and heritage that I think it can easily be called a British classic. There’s nothing else like it after all! Another British classic is, of course, the Yorkshire and Sunday is British Yorkshire Pudding day.

It may be a little bit naughty, but proper homemade Yorkshires are one of my all-time favourites. Particularly the huge ones filled with something delicious and old fashioned like beef stew or braised sausages with gravy.

The first of our modern Dairy Cookbooks
had a giant Yorkshire pudding on its cover.

I am sure that contributed to its success (as well as being a fantastic cookbook of course.)

Yorkshire Pudding is one of the most iconic of British dishes, famous not only in the UK but also abroad. It is also a recipe that has stood the test of time, with its present form boasting a history dating back to the 1700s and its predecessor, Batter Pudding, having been eaten perhaps centuries before that throughout Great Britain. How to find Dairy Diary recipes

How do I find an old Dairy Diary recipe?

This is probably the question I hear most from our customers.

There is usually an elaborate story attached to the question as people seem to be mortified that their precious Dairy Diaries have somehow gone astray.

Even though I live and breathe Dairy Diary, I confess that I don’t keep them all – I just cut out the recipes and keep them in ‘Mummy’s Recipe Folder’ – so I wouldn’t be at all offended if people admit that they throw away their old copies!

To find Dairy Diary and Dairy Cookbook recipes search the Dairy Diary recipe library  where you will find hundreds of fabulous recipes at your fingertips and don’t forget to subscribe to the Dairy Diary Chat blog for weekly recipes (some of which are from previous diaries).

There are one or two recipe requests that crop up
time and again. In fact, they have been so
popular that we have re-photographed them
and published them again in recent diaries.

Two of the cakes are listed below. Give them a try – they may become your firm family favourites too.

Be warm and toasty on Bonfire Night!

Bonfire Night recipes

It’s a glorious morning this morning, with the sun and frost making everything sparkle.

It will be a cold Bonfire Night tonight and so we had better wrap up warm!

Of course, eating something hot
and scrumptious is essential too.

On Saturday night we headed to our local Bonfire evening with much enthusiasm. The fireworks were terrific, but the catering left much to desire and I’m afraid to say that my five-year-old and I resorted to sharing a tub of pic n’ mix sweets and a hot chocolate as everything else looked so unappetising!

Tonight will be different though as we will be watching those unfailingly comical home-lit fireworks and consuming our own grub. This is my selection of goodies for tonight – all from the Dairy Diary of course! I can’t wait!

Have fun everyone and stay safe.

National Baking Week

National Baking Week recipes

This week is National Baking Week and it just so happens to be my birthday week too!

For the past few days I have been leaving cookbooks open at appropriate pages hoping that my hints for a gorgeous homemade birthday cake will come to fruition.

I just hope it’s my other half
who takes the hint rather than
my children, whose attempts
could be calamitous!

National Baking Week was set up to celebrate good old British baking and to raise vital funds for Great Ormand Street Children’s Hospital (GOSH).

Baking is all about having fun, whether baking to relax, baking with your children, baking with friends, or simply enjoying the fruits of your labour with a cuppa. Why not host a bake sale at work, school or at a local event?

Visit the website for a downloadable info pack http://www.nationalbakingweek.co.uk/downloads.

Here are the recipes I have been hinting at. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Banana and Cinnamon Muffins

Banana and Cinnamon Muffins recipe

Try these lovely moist muffins. Ready in just 30 minutes!

Makes 12 muffins
Time required
30 mins Per muffin: 274 Kcal
11g fat (6.4g saturated)
Suitable for vegetarians
Suitable for freezing

Self-raising flour 300g (11oz)
Baking powder 1 tsp
Bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp
Ground cinnamon ½ tsp
Demerara sugar 200g (7oz)
Full fat milk 300ml (½ pint)
Butter 125g (4½oz), melted
Eggs 2
Peeled bananas 200g (7oz) (about 2), finely chopped

1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Sift together all the dry ingredients, except the sugar, into a bowl and lightly mix together. Then add the sugar and mix into the flour.

2 Whisk together the milk, melted butter and eggs in a jug. Stir in the chopped banana. Gently fold the liquid into the dry ingredients, taking care not to overmix.

3 Divide the batter between the muffin cases and bake for 15–20 minutes or until well risen and golden. Serve warm or cold.

Cook’s tip. If you don’t have a banana to hand, try this recipe with the same weight of frozen raspberries or blueberries or even a mixture – don’t let them thaw.
