The Romance of Steam Trains

Llangollen Steam Railway

.

It’s all getting a little steamy

Steam trains have a certain romantic allure, especially if you sit in a carriage like this one depicted by one of my favourite artists, Eric Ravilious.

Eric ravilious trainI love to sit and watch the scenery go by whilst wondering what it would be like to go back in time and ride by steam during its heyday.

This year saw the 75th anniversary of the Mallard breaking the world speed record for steam on Stoke Bank just south of Grantham, Lincolnshire. And next year it is 100 years since the Flying Scotsman began its infamous Edinburgh to London route, clocking 100 mph – the first ever to achieve this speed. To commemorate this we have a feature on the joy of steam travel in the 2014 Dairy Diary, giving a brief history and lots of info on railway-related places to visit.

Llangollen in North Wales gets a mention
and quite rightly so, it’s fabulous!

I took the whole family to Llangollen railway last weekend for the fantastic Day Out with Thomas. The children got to ride on Daisy, Thomas and Douglas and well as enjoy Thomas-related crafts and face painting.

I’m not sure who was most excited, the children or their dad and grandad! It was a truly lovely family day out and we even got to enjoy the spectacle of a double rainbow sweeping over the river Dee.

2014 diary

It’s here! The 2014 Dairy Diary.

Officially launched today. Hurrah!!

Life working on the Dairy Diary can be a strange one – you never know what year you’re in for a start.  The 2014 Dairy Diary is brand new to everyone else, but Marion our editor, Karen our designer and I have been working on it since early in 2012! So, it’s a huge delight to be able to properly, finally, launch it.

I know I would say this, but I honestly think it’s the best yet. We have refreshed the design inside so it has a more modern, magaziney feel but it’s still uber user-friendly and Dairy Diaryesque.

And of course it’s packed full of the most delicious triple-tested recipes, many with a distinctly seasonal twist. My personal favourites include Cauliflower & Potato Curry, Crunchy Alaska Salmon Goujons and St George’s Day Pudding.

The features are simply fascinating and include food for kids, anti-ageing foods, companion planting and my personal favourite super-cute mice – a gorgeous project for crocheting the cutest little mouses.

2014 diary contents

The best bit about the Dairy Diary though; is the diary itself. Not only is there plenty of space to write each day – essential for us with busy families – it also has dainty little dates stickers for those important events, such as birthdays that we really need to remember. Try to hide them from the children though or they’ll be adorning the front of their t-shirt rather than the diary (it’s lucky a can get some spares!)

There’s also a handy pocket for stashing all those notes that get lost amongst the hairclips, odd socks and wet wipes in the bottom of your handbag (or is that just me?!)

So if you’re looking for the perfect planning tool for 2014 look no further, the Dairy Diary has it all.

It’s great value at £7.25 and ON SALE NOW.

Love Parks Week

Love Parks Week

Love Parks Week

This may sound a bit odd but I love parks, honestly I do LOVE parks.

As a child of the seventies and eighties all we had was a patch of dried up grass, some swings with peeling paint and a roundabout that regularly broke children’s arms. Maybe that was just in my village….

My children however, have access to the most amazing spaces with brilliant equipment. Our local town has a wonderful toddler playground, fabulous swingy things and zip wires for the older kids and even outdoor gym equipment. All just a five-minute drive away.

Love Parks WeekAND excitement in our tiny village has reached fever pitch!

Or what passes for fever pitch here, which is a couple of us saying ‘oooo’ at the school bus stop in a morning. Work has finally begun on our park (I say finally as this park has been in its planning stages for the last ten years!)

What started off as four swings and a goal post is being transformed into playground heaven. Lots of fabulous equipment for our little ones, picnic tables and all complete with a view of the golf course on one side and canal on the other.

So, we will no longer have to drive to the park (smugly feeling green), we can now wander up to road to play and picnic to our hearts’ content.

And what do these parks cost us?
Nothing! So in the age of austerity
let us celebrate Love Parks Week
and enjoy them.

Look out for events in a park near you at http://loveparksweek.org.uk/

Don’t forget to pack your picnic.
