Mum’s bread pudding

A pair of blackbirds frequent our garden – enticed in by the ground feed and crumbled bread I put out for them no doubt.

They nested in the shrubs at the bottom of my neighbour’s garden earlier in the year and I think they may have another brood.

Haven’t seen the female for a few days, but then I haven’t seen the male popping into the bushes, beak full of tasty morsels, either! Maybe it’s just wishful thinking – hope the local moggies haven’t got her!

The birds do like the bread and it is a bit special – baked on the premises by an Italian baker about five minutes’ walk away.

How lucky is that! It’s wonderful fresh, so I tend to get a large loaf every two days (makes good toast on the second day), which means there’s often some left. I have been giving it to the birds but I’m wondering about making some bread pudding.

Bread pudding

Cherry Bread PuddingMy mother had the world’s best recipe, which she wrote down for me centuries ago and I now can’t find.

I haven’t thrown it away so it’s here somewhere and one day I’ll find it! Meantime I was flicking through my copy of the Dairy Diary and came across a recipe for Cherry Bread Puddings.

From the picture they look fantastic, so I’ll give them a go. Who knows, they man run my mum’s a close second!

Fancy your feet nibbled by fish?

Garra Rufa fish nibbling feetLife is full of new experiences, and having your feet nibbled by fish is certainly one of them!

I tried it at the weekend and I have to say it was great, after the initial shock!

Your feet are washed quickly, then you sit on a bench above a tank and plunge in both feet together among goodness knows how many little fish (and no shortage of pirhana jokes!)

They all rush in one quick movement and latch on to your feet and ankles and legs – and they tickle! It’s just such a surprise.

Apparently, my reaction was very satisfying because I shrieked – can’t believe there’s anyone who doesn’t!

Once you get used to the tickling sensation, you settle down for fifteen minutes of being grazed, and the fish take off all the dead skin. Afterwards your skin feels lovely and smooth.

The fish are Garra Rufa fish from Turkey, and they seem to be taking off in a big way in the UK. There’s a craze for being nibbled by fish (it’s not often you get to say that!)

Afterwards we went for coffee and cake!

Raisin Parkin

Raisin ParkinJust thinking about making some Raisin Parkins (p.153 of this year’s Dairy Diary) – as a contribution to a tea party – and realised it’s been Volunteer’s Week from 1 to 7 June. There have been lots of charitable events round the country so I hope they all went well. I’ll make a note for next year and meanwhile get on with the raisin parkins.

It’s nearly garden centre time again!

Apparently, Charlie Dimmock and Ronseal are launching an Urban Gardens Week this year, 11-18 April, to encourage novices to have a go and make their outdoor space beautiful!

Herbs a' Plenty, a project from Seasonal Garden Ideas

Herbs a' Plenty, a project from Seasonal Garden Ideas

Not sure about that – beautiful would be good, edible is more likely. I’m thinking of herbs this year – and they’ll make the garden (mine is very small) smell great, too.

I love basil and usually have a pot on the go from the supermarket – some keep growing and last for ages, others, well, don’t! Basil’s great with tomatoes however you have them – soup, sauces, added to stews or vegetable bakes, grilled or raw.

A cheese sandwich with some lovely fresh bread and maybe one of the goat’s cheeses you can get these days, plus sliced tomatoes and some torn basil is hard to beat. Flat-leafed parsley is another favourite, and chives, and a woody bush or two that’ll keep going for a few years – thyme maybe. And some mint – but that’s definitely going in a pot or it’ll take over. Could have some fresh mint tea to go with the sarny. Always assuming successful planting, of course.

I’m opting for plants rather than seeds to give myself a fighting chance, and then we just need a lovely sunny day and lunch outside is sorted – well, we can all dream!

Happy gardening.
