Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year will begin on 3 February 2011 which marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit – year 4709 on the Chinese Calendar!

Chinese Year of the RabbitThe date corresponds to the new moon in either late January or February. The Chinese calendar is different from that used in the United Kingdom. It is made up of a cycle of twelve years, each of them being named after an animal. This is very like our signs of the zodiac. Some people believe that people born in a particular year such as the year of the Dog will have some of the characteristics of that animal.

Did you know that the Dairy Diary has all the notable calendar dates you need?

Over a sixth of the people in the world celebrate Chinese New Year.
Customs vary in different parts of the world, but everywhere the main idea is the same. It is a time to remember the family and wish everyone peace and prosperity in the coming year.

So a neat second chance to kick-start failed new year resolutions and a great reason to cook some delicious Chinese-style dishes such as Oriental Chicken Stew from the  Hearty & Healthy, Dairy Cookbook.

Don’t forget your can still enter the competition to win a copy of Hearty & Healthy.

The importance of breakfast

Did you know it’s Farmhouse Breakfast Week?

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the variety on offer.

With one in four people regularly skipping breakfast, the challenge for the nation is to re-think the morning routine. For further information see http://www.shakeupyourwakeup.com/

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.Breakfast is so important

When you wake up your energy reserves are low. What you choose to eat at breakfast affects your mood, physical and mental performance, weight and your general and long-term health.

If you miss breakfast you are likely to get hungry mid-morning and grab a snack that is high in calories and fat but low in nutrients and fibre.

Studies show that children who regularly eat a cereal based breakfast are healthier and less likely to be overweight. In fact teenagers who ate breakfast cereals more than five times a week weighed less, had a smaller waist size and lower blood sugar levels than those who rarely ate cereal.

But it is not just children that perform less well if they miss breakfast, other studies show that adults who ate breakfast tended to work faster, made fewer mistakes in logic tests and had better memory recall compared with breakfast skippers.

Research among adults shows that people who eat breakfast are more likely to be within the ideal weight range than people who skip breakfast.

So I won’t be skipping breakfast again! I do enjoy muesli and fruit, but at the weekend I often fancy something a little different. Eggs Florentine is a favourite – hearty, healthy and very quick to prepare.

Sustainable Mackerel

Did you watch Hugh’s Fish Fight on Channel 4?

I watched it with my 12 year son and we found it both fascinating and disturbing. Surely all that waste can’t be acceptable?

He has signed up to the campaign, fishfight.net, and insisted that all five of us did so too!

Will the series change your fish buying habits? How do you feel about farmed salmon being coloured to supermarket specifications?

I think we will be eating a lot more mackerel in future and looking to buy organically farmed salmon where possible.

So we will be cooking this quick and easy Mackerel with Lime and Caper Sauce recipe this week – and I’ll ask my fishmonger to fillet the mackerel.

New Year Resolutions

Did you make a New Year Resolution? Well, here we are in week two of 2011 and I am struggling already.

Not to keep my resolution, but to start it!

My resolution is to lose weight, get fit and eat healthily. Sound familiar?

The first problem is a house packed with chocolates, snacks and goodies left-over from Christmas – just too many temptations.

But I am starting today. All temptations will be banished to the back of the cupboards and only good healthy food will be bought. Hmmm… we’ll see how long that lasts!

Have you made a New Year Resolution? How’s it going? Do you have any tips to ensure success?

A good place to start is the Fit and Healthy feature in the new Dairy Diary.

Tonight I will prepare the fantastic Salmon and Ginger Fishcakes recipe from Good Food, Fast. Delicious, healthy and ready it just 30 minutes.

Goodbye from me for nine months

Goodbye to 2010 and goodbye from me for nine months!

Over the past eighteen months it has been a pleasure to blog about all things Dairy Diary (and some other stuff too).

I really appreciate all your kind comments and support during this time.

However, I am looking like an exaggerated version of Mr Greedy and so it’s time to put away my keyboard for nine months while I concentrate on having twins.

You will be well looked after in my absence with lots of new guest bloggers! Each member of the Dairy Diary team will contribute with their favourite recipes, tips and chat for 2011.

So, have a happy and fun-filled 2011. I will be blogging again in October.

From the 2011 Dairy Diary, try these scrumptious Veggie Crisps – perfect for entertaining or snuggling in front of the fire.

Happy Christmas everyone!

We all know that Christmas is the perfect time to get together with all the family.

Relax after your Christmas guests have goneEven those of us hopeless at keeping in touch usually manage a meet-up over the Christmas period.

However, once the influx of people has disappeared and just a few mince pie crumbs remain, it is lovely to relax, put your feet up and enjoy some tranquillity (and dubious TV programmes.)

Unless you have small children of course!

Clever Cooking

Our Clever Cooking for One or Two cookbook is the perfect antidote to the Christmas frivolities. Full of easy recipes for one or two, it will keep you satisfied with delicious food, without having to slave in the kitchen for hours or waste ever-more expensive ingredients.

This delicious Cranberry & Muesli Muffin recipe from the book is just perfect for using up the leftover cranberry sauce.

Make your own Cranberry Sauce

If you need a simple recipe try our Cranberry Sauce (a world away from the stuff found in a jar). It’s taken from our new edition Dairy Book of Home Cookery – so hot off the press, it doesn’t go on sale until next summer!
