The Big (Virtual) Lunch and some good news

The big lunch

The Big (Virtual) Lunch

At such a difficult time, where people are struggling in so many ways, it’s heartwarming to hear of so many positive stories in local communities.

There are countless acts of community kindness in our own little village every day, but these are most memorable for me: The tiny village bakery now delivers food parcels to the elderly and vulnerable.

We found a leaflet featuring local walks on our doorstep one evening, and one local even dresses-up as Walley (from Where’s Walley?) on his daily walk so that people can spot where he is!

Now more than ever, we need to make
time for each other and say thanks.

The Big Lunch is the UK’s thanksgiving weekend for neighbours and communities; a time where people come together (virtually, of course) to celebrate community connections and get to know one another a little better.

So, let’s get the nation talking with a bite to eat and have some fun with The Big Virtual Lunch this coming weekend.

For details on how to hold a virtual lunch for your community take a look at the Eden Project Communities webpage

And to eat?

I would opt for something simple and delicious. You don’t want to be slaving for hours in the kitchen. Give these two recipes a try, they are quick to prepare but sooo good.

Sea Bass and Chocolate Fruit

Pan-Fried Sea Bass & Scallops with Hollandaise Sauce

Fresh Fruit with Chocolate Dip

Both these recipes are from our super-popular cookbook, Just for One or Two.

Oh, and the good news? 40% off!

Yes, for a limited time only we now have 40% off everything on our website!!!

Stock up with goodies for yourself and maybe even treat someone in your community too?

Keep safe and well.

May Bank Holiday change

May Bank Holiday

Did you know that the early May Bank Holiday has changed?

We’re sure you saw the bank holiday change sticker on your Dairy Diary, but just in case you missed it remember that the bank holiday is now on Friday 8 May (this change was announced late and after we had printed all the diaries!).

The first Monday of May is a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. It is called May Day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is known as the Early May Bank Holiday in Scotland.

In 2020, the early May Bank Holiday has been moved from Monday 4 May to Friday, 8 May to coincide with Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day, which marks the 75th anniversary of the formal end of World War II.

It’s not the first time that the Bank Holiday has been moved.
In 1995 it was moved from 1 May to 8 May to commemorate the 50th VE Day.

We hope you manage to enjoy your time despite the current circumstances.

Keep safe and well.

What’s the connection between the clocks change and Coldplay?

Clocks go forward tonight

If you’re not keen on losing an hour in bed tonight; you’ve got Coldplay’s Chris Martin’s Great Great Grandfather to blame for that idea!

Rather than moping about the loss of time to Yellow we can look forward to sunny evenings and al fresco dining.

Clocks need to be put forward 1 hour at 1am tonight.

Or for those who, like me are not night owls, before bed.

We can also use this change as a reminder to do change batteries in the smoke alarms.

Why do the clocks change?

It’s always useful to remember the phrase ‘spring forward, fall back’ when it comes to the clocks change, but why do we change the time twice a year?

In 1907 William Willett, Chris Martin’s (Coldplay) Great Great Grandfather published a leaflet called The Waste of Daylight, encouraging people to get out of bed earlier. As a keen golfer, he got irritated when the sun went down, ending play. Despite his campaigning, Daylight Saving Time wasn’t implemented by Government until 1916, a year after this death.

Random Acts of Kindness Day

Random Acts of Kindness Day

Apart from the usual chores, my children have just two rules; the first of which is BE KIND.

It’s something that we should all try to do, each and every day.

Be kind whenever possible.
It’s always possible.
Dalai Lama

We’re so busy, that even though the intention is there, it can get forgotten. That’s why I love the idea of Random Acts of Kindness Day (today).

It reminds us to do something special for someone, just because it’s a nice thing to do.

Win a bouquetThere are a million and one different ways of showing kindness today. But to start you off, here’s something really quick that you can do.

Click here and nominate someone you know who deserves a treat. We will pick a winner at random to receive a stunning bouquet of flowers.

Make yours a 2020 to remember

Could-Do-List-2020

The new Roaring Twenties are now in full swing and many of us will be trying to stick to those tricky New Year’s Resolutions.

This year, I’ve decided to make an alternative affirmation, and rather than list the things I shouldn’t do (eat chocolate/drink wine!), instead I’ve made a list of the things I would love to do this year.

This list is without pressure; its title is the ‘Could Do’ list, which means that it would be lovely to achieve but is not essential. That way, I don’t feel as though I have failed if I don’t tick off everything on my list – quite the opposite of a Resolution, which I so often fail at.

The Could Do List comprises things that
I would really love to do in 2020.

With the caveat that they are attainable (take 6 months off for an around the world trip is not on my list!)

I made my list over several days, and when I thought of something else that I really fancy doing, I added it. It’s at the back of my Dairy Diary so that I can refer to it or add to it whenever I choose.

Ranging from the small things (bake bread) so the larger goals (plan a long-haul holiday) I’ve tried to include ideas that will enrich my life and improve my wellbeing (slow down and be calmer). Thus aiming for a happy and healthy 2020.

Why not open your diary today and make your ‘Could Do List’.

It could change your 2020 for the better!
