We hope you have a lovely day.

Find out a little bit more about this famous Saint’s Day here.

And if you’re looking for something new and rather delicious to bake today (with Scotch whisky of course) look no further than these cute cupcakes.

Gently spiced and packed full of fruit and chopped pecan nuts, these moist cakes are topped with a scrumptious chocolate whisky frosting.

Recipe of the Week: Bakewell Tart

Bakewell Tart

Every Sunday, we enjoy a ‘proper pud’

The children don’t have to listen to ‘have a yogurt’ or ‘get a piece of fruit’, we all enjoy something thoroughly enjoyable and decadent.

This has to be planned in with our meals as a weekly essential, and if I forget there’s much complaining ‘but it’s Sunday’. Meal planning used to take place on the back of an old letter or envelope, but I now have the pleasure of a real Meal Planner.

Make planning more pleasurable with our brand-new Meal Planner!

Dairy Diary Meal Planner Pad with shopping listThe Meal Planner lists the days of the week down the side and has a column for lunch and evening meal as well as an entry for notes at the bottom. There’s also a lined tear-off shopping list on the right. It even has a hole drilled at the top should you wish to hang it up to keep it off the kitchen surface.

This is an invaluable tool in helping to reduce food waste as you can plan what you’re going to eat and buy only what you need and will actually use; thus saving money too! Win, win.

You’ll find the Meal Planner in the 2021 Dairy Diary Set and the Pocket Diary Set.

Both available to buy now!

For this week’s dessert, I’ve chosen the original Bakewell Tart

It may be different from the one you recognise, but it’s the original (and I think, the best!)

It follows the traditional recipe from the Rutland Arms in Bakewell and uses puff pastry, raspberry jam and ground almonds.

Venison with Mushroom & Blackberry Sauce

It’s British Game Week this week

So now is the perfect time to purchase high-quality British venison for this gorgeous autumnal recipe.

Venison is low in saturated fat and high in protein and iron. In this recipe, the rich meat pairs beautifully with the fruity flavour from the blackberries, port and bramble jelly.

Stir Up Sunday: The Perfect Christmas Pudding recipe

Christmas Pudding

Tomorrow is known as Stir Up Sunday, when tradition suggests we make the Christmas Pudding

There is a myriad of recipes for Christmas pud, but the traditional version would contain 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and his disciples.

Sometimes charms or coins were (and still are) added and were said to bring luck if you found one in your portion (unless you broke your tooth on it of course!) Find out more about this tradition here.

The Dairy Book of Home CookeryOur classic recipe, from the Dairy Book of Home Cookery, has been enjoyed by families since the 1960s.

If your copy of the book has gone astray or is looking a little worse-for-wear, why not treat yourself to a new one? Find out more.

Dairy Diary stickers save the day!

Dairy Diary 2021 with stickers

Avoid the embarrassment of forgotten dates with Dairy Diary stickers

As my friends and family will attest, I’m a little organise-obsessed (apologies to my husband here). I’d love to be laid-back and spontaneous, but it’s just not me.

Imagine my horror then when I almost missed a birthday this week.

The name was written in my Dairy Diary, but I had forgotten to put a birthday sticker next to it.

Sporadically, I’ll look through my diary for stickers and then buy gifts, cards and wrap well in advance of posting them.

This week, however, required a mad dash to the farm shop for a couple of books, a mildly eccentric card found in the bottom of the drawer, and some very inappropriate gift-wrapping (how many 12-year old boys appreciate pink flamingos?!)

Dairy Diary with stickers I'm notes pocket

This is why I (usually!) find our stickers so very useful.

Not only is there a plethora of birthday stickers, there’s a couple of Christening and Wedding, and some holiday stickers (here’s hoping they get used!) There are also reminders for appointments, such as doctors, vets, dentist etc.

And renewal letters are not always prompt or reliable, so there are renewals reminder stickers too, covering insurances, car tax and service etc.

You’ll find the Memorable Dates Sticker Sheet in the Notes Pocket of every single Dairy Diary.

Look out for yours when you open your 2021 edition

Plant a wonderful winter windowbox

Christmas Roses

How to enjoy Christmas roses from early winter to early spring

Christmas roses are one of the few flowering plants able to withstand winter temperatures – which makes them ideal for an outdoor winter windowbox.

Here they are teamed with conifer twigs, fir cones and gaultheria berries.

The large creamy white flowers
of the Christmas rose will gradually
turn a soft pink as they age.

Plant your windowbox in late autumn

Christmas roses flower from early winter to early spring.

It shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete.

For an extra Christmassy effect, lightly spray the fir cones with artificial ‘snow’.
